A person plans his course, but the Lord directs his steps.

Into the Text

Big decisions in life—like where to go to college, whether to move, or what step to take next—can stir up anxiety in our minds and hearts. We find ourselves making lists, asking for advice, and praying for direction, and yet the stress and anxiety still linger. What if I get it wrong? What if I miss God’s will for my life?

But Proverbs 16 brings a gentle, freeing truth—we plan, but the Lord directs.

God never asked us to carry the pressure of getting every step just right. He invites us to walk not in fear, but in wisdom. And wisdom begins with surrender. Then we rest in the knowledge that God doesn’t just know the future, He lovingly rules over it. His plans are never shaken by our uncertainty or missteps.

Seeking God’s will isn’t about waiting for a lightning bolt moment or a perfectly detailed map. It’s about inviting Him into the process—laying our desires, fears, and hopes before Him with open hands and saying, “God, I trust You more than I trust myself.”

Yes, we can and should plan. Yes, it’s wise to research, seek godly counsel, and think carefully. But even the best plan is still submitted to the Lord. He sees what we cannot. He knows what lies ahead. And His direction often unfolds not in a dramatic answer but in quiet, daily faithfulness—trusting Him with the next step.

Sometimes, God’s will is unmistakably clear. And other times we must simply trust and obey, step by step, without fully understanding. But in those moments of uncertainty, we can always trust His heart. He is good, He is faithful, and He walks with us every step of the way. He is a good Father, and we never walk alone.
