Moses and Aaron did so, just as the LORD had commanded. He raised the staff and struck the water that was in the Nile right before the eyes of Pharaoh and his servants, and all the water that was in the Nile was turned to blood.
Into the Text
Have you ever heard the phrase “Seeing is believing”? It expresses the idea that something is so improbable that it must be seen in order to be believed.
Though Moses and Aaron followed God’s directive to go to Pharaoh and ask for the Israelites to be released, Pharaoh would not relent. God performed a miracle through Moses of turning his staff into a snake, but Pharaoh’s heart could not be turned to believe in the power of the One True God.
God would begin to show Pharoah and the people of Egypt who was truly in control. Yet, we see that their hearts were not changed.
The people saw that the Nile turned to blood. They saw that the fish had died, and the water was not good for drinking. Seeing was not believing for the people of Egypt.
Faith in God is so much more than simply seeing or having head knowledge. What we know about God has to transform our hearts. Notice that through these miracles, Pharaoh learned a great deal about God. And yet, his heart was hardened.
Even in the ministry of Jesus, most people who saw His power in the miracles He performed did not believe in Him. They did not want to come to Him as their all-sufficient Savior.
What about you? Are you living in skepticism and doubt, asking God to prove Himself to you? He has already proven Himself through Jesus, and He wants you to trust Him with your life.
I pray that your head knowledge about God would really transform your heart and lead you to trust and love Him.
Prayer
God, thank you for all that you have revealed to me through the Bible and in answered prayers. Please help me to know you more and trust you better. Amen.
