Salvation: Sanctification

“For this is God’s will: that you become holy, that you keep away from sexual immorality,”

1 Thessalonians 4:3

“For by one offering he has perfected for all time those who are made holy.”

Hebrews 10:14

Into the Text

The next component of salvation is sanctification. Sanctification is a lifelong process through which God shapes us to be more like Jesus. This transformative work begins at the moment of our salvation and continues as we walk daily with Him.

Just as justification is a work of God’s grace so is sanctification. As we read God’s Word and immerse ourselves in His truth, the Holy Spirit helps us to start shedding sinful habits and attitudes, gradually reflecting more of Jesus’ character.

Our journey of sanctification is not about earning God’s approval but is a response to His immense love for us. Our obedience stems from this love and aims to glorify Him (Mark 12:30). As we grow in sanctification, we become more attuned to God’s holiness and our need for His grace. This growing awareness drives us to rely on His strength as we seek to live in obedience in every aspect of our lives.

Loving Christ motivates us to reject sin and follow His commandments. The Spirit empowers us to live in a way that aligns our identity in Christ and our commitment to His teachings.

While complete sanctification and freedom from sin will only be realized when we see Jesus face to face, also known as glorification, our current journey toward holiness is crucial. Philippians 1:6 assures us that God will continue to work in us and not give us up until His work is completed.

Prayer

Dear Jesus, thank you for the ongoing work of sanctification in my life. Help me grow in holiness and reflect your character in all I do. Empower me by your Spirit to put aside sin and walk in obedience to your Word. In your name, Amen.
