Salvation: Repentance

“Therefore repent and turn back so that your sins may be wiped out,”

Acts 3:19

“The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some regard slowness, but is being patient toward you because he does not wish for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.”

2 Peter 3:9

Into the Text

Repentance is one of those church words that we hear often but may not have a full understanding. This powerful directive calls us to leave behind our sins and embrace a renewed life in Christ. It is the picture of going toward an object, stopping, turning around, and running in the opposite direction.

Repentance goes beyond mere sorrow for our wrongdoings. It encompasses a deep, heartfelt remorse for having distanced ourselves from God. This genuine repentance involves an honest admission of our sins without any attempts to justify or excuse them. David’s heartfelt plea in Psalm 51 echo a sincere yearning for forgiveness and restoration, reminding us of the importance of coming before God with a humble and contrite heart.

It is then that we flee from the sin we have committed and run towards the life, truth, and freedom of Jesus.

In 2 Peter 3:9, we are reassured of God’s patience and His desire for all to come to repentance. When we approach God with true repentance, He promises to forgive and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).

Repentance is one of the first steps of salvation, but it is also an ongoing posture of the heart. As we grow in our faith, we become more aware of our sins and our need for God’s grace. This continuous process of repentance fosters spiritual growth and deepens our relationship with God.

Repentance lifts the weight of sin, brings peace to our hearts, and renews our spirits. It paves the way for God to work more fully in our lives, transforming us into the likeness of Christ.

Prayer

Dear Jesus, thank you for your patience and your desire for me to come to repentance. Help me turn away from sin and turn to you sincerely. Forgive me, cleanse me, and restore me to fellowship with you. May my life be marked by continual repentance and transformation. In your name, Amen.
