But practicing the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Christ, who is the head.
Ephesians 4:15
Into the Text
The innocence of a child is one of the sweetest things to witness. Their wonder, curiosity, and ability to believe whatever they hear make for fun days and treasured memories. While it is appropriate for children to act this way, it would be odd for an adult to never grow out of acting like a child. Rather, we mature over time.
Our relationship with Christ is one that is to also grow over time. This process is called sanctification. The way we were and our understanding of Jesus and Scripture when we first came to know Him are not meant to remain stagnant.
Remember, Paul is calling the people of Ephesus, and subsequently us, to grow to maturity. He’s telling the believers to be on guard against false teaching, the deceitfulness of the world, and the temptations of the enemy.
The way we do this is through consistently speaking the truth about Jesus, His words and works, as well as encouraging and warning each other. Speaking truth like this is a great act of love as it helps us to mature as Christians.
If we’re honest, it can be easy to be sidetracked from Jesus. There are so many distractions, people, and things vying for our attention.
If we want to “grow up into Christ” and set our minds on things that matter, it is important to hold gospel truths in front of us. And as we do this together with other Christians, we will be united through our consistent encouragement as we speak these truths into each other’s lives.
Prayer
Jesus, I praise you for leading the church as you do. Help me to remain rooted in the gospel so that I am not tossed about by deceit, distractions, and temptations. Amen.
