Resisting Temptation

Then Jesus said to him, “Go away, Satan! For it is written: ‘You are to worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’” Then the devil left him, and angels came and began ministering to his needs.

Matthew 4:10–11

Into the Text

I believe Matthew 4:10–11 is one of the most powerful passages of Scripture, because we see how powerful God’s Word is when it is spoken. Jesus quoted Scripture, and Satan vanished. Satan wanted to argue and debate, but after a forty-day fast, Jesus wasn’t having any of it. Jesus wasn’t going to play Satan’s game. He quoted the truth, and Satan was defeated. Jesus overcame Satan with the Word of God. We can, too.

There is a powerful lesson in these verses. Both Jesus and Satan knew Scripture and could quote it, but Jesus defeated Satan with Scripture because He didn’t twist it for His own advantage. You can prove almost anything when Scripture is taken out of context. Satan didn’t quote the complete verses. He failed to include portions that would disprove his suggestion. So don’t make the mistake of being deceived by someone just because they seem to know Scripture. If someone implies meaning to the text that directly contradicts other portions of Scripture, we know it is not true.

Satan tried to tempt Jesus to find fulfillment apart from God. Jesus’ response to Satan’s temptation reminds us that we are called to worship and serve God above all else. We must not be swayed by what the world tells us is important but instead put our faith and trust in the Lord. It can be easy to fall into the trap of wanting what the world has to offer, but when we put God first in our lives, He will always provide us with the guidance and support we need to resist temptation and live a life that glorifies Him.

Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus, thank You for experiencing temptation but not giving in to it. Thank You for experiencing hunger but not letting hunger tempt You to move outside of God’s will. Thank You for showing us the power of Your Word and how to effectively use it to defeat temptation in our lives. Amen.
