“Do not let your hearts be distressed. You believe in God; believe also in me. There are many dwelling places in my Father’s house. Otherwise, I would have told you, because I am going away to make ready a place for you. And if I go and make ready a place for you, I will come again and take you to be with me, so that where I am you may be too.”

John 14:1-3

Into the Text

As Jesus prepared to go to the cross, He also prepared His disciples’ hearts for His departure. And so, He spoke peace over them: “Do not let your hearts be troubled.”

Jesus reminded them of something they couldn’t yet see but that He wanted them to believe. He was going ahead to prepare a place for them, a forever home crafted with care and love by the Master Craftsman. Not only was He preparing a place, but He also promised to come back and bring them to Himself.

The greatest part of heaven isn’t the streets of gold or the absence of pain. It’s the presence of Jesus. The One who came near in the manger, who walked the dusty roads, who died and rose again, will one day bring us into His presence forever.

This world can feel shaky. But Jesus’ words in John 14 are a promise we can hold onto: “I will come back.” He is not finished. He hasn’t forgotten. One day, we will be with Him forever.

That’s the hope we carry into this season. Christmas is not just a celebration of His first coming. It’s an anticipation of His second.

Sweet friend, you are not forgotten. For those who have trusted in Jesus, the Savior is preparing a place for you—even now. And one day, He will return and gather believers into His presence where you’ll finally be home.

Prayer

Lord, thank you for preparing a place for me. When life feels uncertain, help me to rest in the hope of your return. I long for the day when I will be with you face to face, forever. Amen.
