Our Bodies are a Temple

Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God with your body.

1 Corinthians 6:19–20

Into the Text

When we choose to take care of, treasure, and steward the incredible bodies God has given us, we honor Him. Stewarding our bodies means that our daily choices matter to God, from how we nourish our bodies to how we dress, or what we say.

In 1 Corinthians 6:19–20, Paul teaches us that our bodies are sacred. They are the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit and we should care for them as such. When we treat our bodies as temples, we show the world that we belong to God. We demonstrate that our identity in Christ sets us apart from the world, and we invite others to witness His transforming power in our lives.

We should care for the body God has given us as best we can under our personal circumstances. Where possible, we should choose healthy foods, get enough rest, and stay active. And, most of all, we should never use our bodies for activities which dishonor God, such as addictions or immoral behavior.

When we live like this, we offer our bodies as living sacrifices to God, making ourselves available for His purposes (See Romans 12:1). As we do, we find our souls refreshed and our hearts more attuned to His voice.

When we choose to live set apart for God’s glory, honoring God by how we steward our bodies is another way to reflect God’s goodness and glory to a watching world.

Prayer

Dear Jesus, thank You for making my body a temple for Your Holy Spirit. Help me to steward my body in a way that brings you honor and glory. Amen.
