But the LORD saw that the wickedness of humankind had become great on the earth. Every inclination of the thoughts of their minds was only evil all the time. The LORD regretted that he had made humankind on the earth, and he was highly offended.
Into the Text
It didn’t take long for the effects of Adam and Eve’s sin to spread like a disease amongst humanity. In that relatively short time, mankind had become exceedingly evil to the point that the Lord regretted creating mankind. Scripture tells us that every thought in their minds was “only evil all the time.” How devastating. How heartbreaking.Â
As a good Father, God created a perfect world for His prized creation to enjoy and flourish in. Pleasures, provisions, and beauty were at their disposal, and they lived in unobstructed fellowship with God Himself.Â
But they chose disobedience, and their sin snowballed. Where did it start? Just as with Eve, it started in their minds. Psalm 139:2 says that “You know when I sit down and when I get up; even from far away you understand my motives.” They could not hide anything from God. He knew their every move, thought, and motive.Â
The same is true for us. Nothing is hidden from God, who sees our every thought and knows our every motive. There’s no point in trying to pretend before Him. However, as God’s children, our minds are to be changed by the power of the Holy Spirit as we live by faith.Â
We do not have to be slaves to our flesh and the evil inclinations of our minds. We can “take every thought captive to make it obey Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5b).Â
Prayer
God, please protect my mind. Reveal to me any thoughts or motives that are evil. Fill me with your Holy Spirit so that I am able to take every thought captive and obey you. Amen.
