I have had mornings when yesterday’s anxiety greeted me like an unwelcome wake-up call.
Maybe you’ve had mornings like that, too. The regret. The disappointment. The grief that doesn’t seem to lift. The situation that still hasn’t changed, no matter how many times you have prayed about it.
On those mornings, hope can feel very far away.
Jeremiah understood that feeling better than most. Lamentations is one of the most raw and honest books in the Bible. Jeremiah was a man sitting in the rubble of everything he loved, processing his grief with unflinching honesty before God. He didn’t pretend everything was fine. He didn’t paste a smile over his heartbreak. He simply sat in the middle of his devastation and told God exactly how he felt.
Jeremiah is not a man writing from a place of comfort or ease. This is a man choosing to declare God’s faithfulness from the darkest place he has ever been. He is anchoring himself to what he knows is true about God, even when his circumstances are screaming the opposite.
This is faithfulness. It is not the absence of pain or pretending that everything is okay. It is choosing in the middle of the painful, heartbreaking moments to anchor your heart to what you know is true about God, even when you don’t feel it.
His mercies are new every morning. Yesterday’s failures do not define today. Yesterday’s pain does not have to set the tone for today, nor does it mean today’s will go unheard.
So what does that look like practically? It looks like opening God’s Word before you turn to your phone in the morning. It looks like whispering a prayer before your feet hit the floor. It looks like choosing to declare what you know is true about God before the noise of the day has a chance to say otherwise.
No matter what yesterday looked like, this morning is new. His mercies are waiting for you.
