Naked and Unashamed

That is why a man leaves his father and mother and unites with his wife, and they become one family. The man and his wife were both naked, but they were not ashamed.

Genesis 2:24-25

Into the Text

God created the heavens and the earth. Then he set out to create man and placed him in the Garden of Eden. God looked at His creation and said that it was “good.” Yet even in paradise, there was something missing. Of all the “good” that God had created, the one thing He said was “not good” was that Adam was alone.

Before God created Eve, He knew what Adam would need in his companion. He would need a loving helper, a capable partner, and a strong ally. The depth of this intimacy is exemplified by the fact that they would “become one family” and that even in their nakedness “they were not ashamed.” Adam and Eve had nothing to hide from one another or from God.

They were without guilt, shame, or fear. Their hearts and souls were laid bare. Their intimacy was pure and holy. They were fully known by God and one another. This is true paradise. This is the fruit of living in obedience to God. And it’s to this place that we will return when we spend eternity with our gracious God. Our hearts long for it. Our souls crave it, and they will not be satisfied until we return once again to the place we were created for.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, you see me, and you know me. Thank you that my sin is not the end of my story because of Jesus. I long for the day when I will be with you and see you face to face. Amen.
