Moses’ Birth and Call to Lead

God said to Moses, “I AM that I AM.” And he said, “You must say this to the Israelites, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

Exodus 3:14

Into the Text

Exodus 1:8 tells us that four hundred years after the death of Joseph, the new king of Egypt did not know about him. God kept His promise to Abraham, and the people of Israel grew greatly in number. The new Pharaoh grew scared of the Israelites and forced them into slavery.

But God was in control. He would miraculously save Moses from the plot to kill all the Jewish boys, and God would place Moses in Pharaoh’s home to be raised by his daughter.

When Moses escaped to the country after murdering an Egyptian, God met him as he was shepherding his father-in-law’s flocks. Moses looked up and saw a bush on fire, but it wasn’t incinerated. From the bush, God called Moses to lead the people out of slavery and into the land that He had promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Moses asked God who he should say sent him. God replied in a curious way. He said, “I AM.” In Hebrew, this translates to “Yahweh.” This name is indicative of the totality of God’s character. God is. He is without beginning and end. He is holy, just, loving, gracious, sovereign, powerful, and good.

God is the same in the Old Testament as He is today. His name and character remains the same. No matter what you are going through, you can turn to the God who hears, sees, and cares. He is.

Prayer

God, thank you for revealing yourself to Moses and never changing. Help me to learn more about your character and to walk in full faith each and every day. Amen.
