And Moses and Aaron did so; they did just as the LORD commanded them.
Into the Text
The people of Israel had been enslaved in Egypt for hundreds of years. God heard their cries for deliverance and called Moses to be the leader of the people. He would go before Pharaoh and lead the people out of Egypt.
Rather than responding with a resounding yes, Moses doubted his abilities. He did not feel equipped for the task at hand. He asked God to send someone else, for he spoke “with difficulty.” God assured Moses that He would be the one to speak through him. Moses was to be faithful to obey God’s commands, and God would be the one who would deliver the people from Egypt. Moses obeyed.
Just as Moses voiced his fears and questions to God, we can do the same. It’s ok for us to bring our questions to God when He commands us to do something that we feel ill-equipped for. He wants to hear our fears and doubts poured out to Him with raw and honest vulnerability.
Where do you feel limited by your abilities? Does that fear hold you back from obeying God? It’s in these moments that we must remember that God designed each of us with specific abilities and limitations. He made no mistakes. He is well aware that we fall short. But perhaps that’s exactly the point. If we were perfect, we would not need God. We would not need His Holy Spirit to work through us so that we can do all that He has planned for us.
Obedience sometimes just looks like surrender. It’s realizing that we are not enough, but God is. It’s knowing that we can’t do it, but God can. Our circumstances may seem impossible, but with God all things are possible.
Prayer
Lord God, thank you for creating me exactly as you did. I pray that you would give me faith to trust you and obey even when I feel ill-equipped. I know that all things are possible with you. Amen.
