Meditating on God’s Precepts

I will meditate on your precepts and focus on your behavior. I find delight in your statutes; I do not forget your instructions.

Psalm 119:15-16

Into the Text

When I was younger, I used to stress out if I didn’t spend time with God in His Word each morning before school. At that stage in my life, spending time with God was more of a chore than a joy. I saw it as a task, something that I needed to check off rather than someone I looked forward to spending time with.

Just like reading a book about someone isn’t the same as knowing them personally, the same is true of God’s Word. Our goal isn’t just to learn about Him. It’s to know Him personally and intimately.

I’m thankful that through the years, I’ve grown in “delighting” in God’s Word. Setting aside this time with Him daily is so important. It’s how He speaks to us, correcting, comforting, and feeding our hungry souls. But here’s the beauty of abiding. It doesn’t stop when we close our Bible or say “Amen.” Abiding means walking with Him throughout the entire day, not just in our mornings.

To meditate on God’s precepts is to let His Word dwell deeply within us. It’s more than simply reading; it’s turning His words over in our hearts, savoring them, and letting them shape us. As you spend time in His Word, ask God to speak to your heart. Then, as you go about your day, the Holy Spirit will bring those truths to mind, guiding you, comforting you, or giving you wisdom. That’s abiding. It’s not just a “quiet time.” It’s a continuous conversation.

Prayer

Dear Jesus, let my time with you be more than a moment but an ongoing connection that shapes my life. I want to know you more deeply, not just know about you. Amen.
