“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke on you and learn from me because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and my load is not hard to carry.”
Into the Text
I wish I could say that I am gentle every day, but that would not be true. There are days when I am short with the people I love the most. Days when my words come out sharper than I intended, and my patience runs out faster than I would like to admit.
Maybe you have had a few of those days, too.
It is in those moments that I find myself coming back to Matthew 11. If I want to know what gentleness looks like in its purest form, I have to look at Jesus.
In Matthew 11, Jesus extends one of the most tender invitations. He doesn’t describe Himself as powerful, though He is. He doesn’t describe Himself as wise or authoritative, though He is both. In this moment, when He is inviting weary, broken, and heavy-laden people to come to Him, He describes Himself as gentle and humble in heart.
Jesus knew that gentleness was what weary people needed most. They don’t need more demands, pressure, or performance. Rather, they need a gentle, humble Savior who saw their exhaustion and said, “Come. I’ll take that. Rest here.”
Jesus doesn’t just model gentleness for us. He invites us to learn it from Him. Gentleness is something we absorb as we stay close to Jesus and watch how He treats people. His gentleness toward us shapes our gentleness toward others.
Are you weary today? Come to Him first. Let His gentleness toward you fill you back up. The gentleness you extend to others will always flow from the gentleness you have first received from Him.
You cannot give what you have not received. So receive it today. He is waiting.
