He was wounded because of our rebellious deeds, crushed because of our sins; he endured punishment that made us well; because of his wounds we have been healed.

Isaiah 53:5

Into the Text

The united nation of Israel that David had fought to establish and Solomon had solidified fell quickly. After Solomon’s death, his son, Rehoboam, took over the throne. Rather than listening to the wise counsel of his father’s advisors, he listened to the foolish advice of his friends. The people subsequently rebelled, and the nation split in two.

Ten of the tribes formed the northern kingdom of Israel, and two of the tribes formed the southern kingdom of Judah.
As if this wasn’t bad enough, all of the kings of Israel that reigned in the following centuries did evil while only eight kings in Judah did what was right.

Because of the growing idolatry and wickedness within the nation, God sent prophets, or messengers, to call the people back. The prophets reminded the people of God’s faithfulness, warned them of His coming punishment, and urged them to repent. After many years of disobedience, the people were finally given over to what they had wanted: an existence without God.

No matter how far the people strayed from God, He would keep His promises. Nothing could stop God’s plans to send the coming Rescuer, the suffering servant of Isaiah 53. His patience extends far beyond what we can imagine. Jesus is still knocking on the door of our hearts, waiting for us to finally open up and let Him in.

Prayer

God, thank you for being a patient God and giving me lots of chances to turn back to you when I stray. Help me to turn to you right away every time. Amen.
