About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the rest of the prisoners were listening to them.
Into the Text
From the description in the Bible, I can almost picture the night.
It is midnight. Paul and Silas are sitting in the innermost cell of a Roman prison. Their backs are raw and bleeding from a public beating. Their feet are locked in stocks. They have no idea what tomorrow holds or whether they will ever walk out of this place.
If that were you, what would you be doing?
For Paul and Silas, the answer is incredible. In the darkest, most painful, most uncertain moment of their lives, they were praying and singing hymns to God. Not quietly. But loudly enough that the other prisoners could hear them. There was JOY in their voices as they sang to the Lord.
And this was not the kind of joy the world offers. The world’s version of joy is entirely dependent on circumstances. But the joy Paul and Silas had was something completely different. It was a deep, unshakeable, and supernatural joy that circumstances simply could not touch.
How? Because their joy wasn’t rooted in their situation. It was rooted in Jesus.
They knew who God was. They had experienced His faithfulness. They trusted His character even when they couldn’t see or understand His plan. Because of that, joy wasn’t something they had to chase down or manufacture. It was already living inside them, and no prison cell could keep it away.
Sweet friend, you may not be sitting in a Roman prison, but you may be sitting in your own kind of midnight. A season that is painful, confusing, and uncertain. A place where joy feels completely out of reach.
But be encouraged. The same God who was with Paul and Silas in that cell is with you right now, in yours. And the same joy that filled their midnight can fill yours, too. His joy is not reserved just for the easy days. It was made for the midnight ones, too.
