Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:19-20
Into the Text
Those who had followed Jesus were in disbelief. Could Jesus really be dead?
The Saturday of Easter weekend was one of the darkest days of human history. But then Sunday morning came.
As the sun rose, the ground shook and the stone that kept the tomb closed rolled back. Jesus had risen! The grave could not hold Him. Sin and death were defeated forever, winning our salvation.
The gospel of Jesus Christ is the greatest news ever. No longer do we have to stay in our sins or live without hope. Salvation and freedom is found through faith in Jesus. The rescue that was promised in Genesis 3:15 had been accomplished.
Jesus did not leave the disciples on their own to figure out what to do for the rest of their lives. He promised to send the Holy Spirit not only to indwell and empower them to spread the gospel but also to indwell us and all other believers.
At the end of Matthew, Jesus gives the Great Commission, which states that believers are to go into all the world, preach the gospel, baptize individuals, and make disciples. Jesus would be with us as we go. It’s not a commandment that we can opt-in or out. It is one we are all meant to obey.
By doing so, we get to share the best message of hope. He is risen indeed!
Prayer
Jesus, thank you that your death and resurrection accomplish my salvation and the salvation of all who come to you. I pray that you would give me opportunities to proclaim the good news of you. Amen.
