Make sure you are very strong and brave! Carefully obey all the law my servant Moses charged you to keep. Do not swerve from it to the right or to the left, so that you may be successful in all you do.

Joshua 1:7

Into the Text

After Moses died, Joshua began to lead the people of Israel. The old generation of Israelites who had come out of Egypt died in the wilderness due to their lack of faith in God. Now, the new generation was ready to enter into the Promised Land. But first, they had to conquer the people living there.

In Joshua 1, God proclaims that He would be with Joshua and the people. They only needed to be brave, trust, and obey Him. He would bring the victory. The first city to conquer was Jericho. Jericho was well-fortified, yet God brought about a spectacular victory in a way that only He could.

It was through Rahab’s bravery to hide the Israelite spies and Joshua’s faithfulness to follow God’s command to march around the city that the people of Israel found victory. God had moved in a miraculous way, even when it probably looked crazy to those watching.

God may be calling you to something that seems impossible. Know that nothing is impossible with God. He is at work in all the details and will be with you through it all. You only need to trust Him.

Rahab is mentioned again many years later, in the genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1:5). Through her faith and trust that God would be her victory, she became the great-grandmother (by many generations) of Jesus Christ, our true victory.

Prayer

God, thank you that you are the God of the impossible. Help me to trust you like Rahab and Joshua did, for you hold the victory. Amen.
