“You should have the same attitude toward one another that Christ Jesus had, who though he existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped, but emptied himself by taking on the form of a slave, by looking like other men, and by sharing in human nature. He humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death – even death on a cross!”

Philippians 2:5-8

Into the Text

Jesus, being fully God, had every right to stay in heaven. After all, He was God, but He didn’t cling to His status. Instead, He chose humility. He chose to take on humanity. And in obedience, He walked to the cross.

Why? Because He loves us.

Jesus stepped down from heaven to come near—not just to be with us but to rescue us. He was born to rescue us from our sins. The miracle of the manger only makes sense when we see it through the shadow of the cross.

Philippians 2 reminds us that Jesus made Himself nothing. He took on flesh. He walked dusty roads. He experienced growth, hunger, loneliness, and pain. And ultimately, He humbled Himself to the point of death on a cross.

The One who spoke the stars into being allowed Himself to be mocked, beaten, and nailed to a cross that was meant for the torture of criminals. And He did it willingly, out of obedience and love.

For you.

For me.

This is the heart of Christmas—explaining why He came.

Sweet friend, if you ever wonder how much you’re loved, look to the cross. The One who had everything gave it all up. The One who deserved to be served became the Servant. And He did it because He dearly loves you.

Prayer

Jesus, thank you for humbling yourself for me. Help me walk humbly like you did and live each day with a heart of gratitude for all you gave up to save me. Amen.
