In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
Into the Text
In these verses, we can see Paul’s concern for the Christians in Colossae and Laodicea. Even though they had outwardly accepted the gospel, they had a tendency to look elsewhere for “something more.” They wanted to tack something else to the gospel, to find some fresh light outside the Word of God by listening to the enticing words of man’s wisdom.
Sadly, it’s been the same throughout the centuries, and it’s still the same today. Many people have said that the basic teachings of the Bible are great to begin with. But if you really want to be wise in living the Christian life, you need to learn something more.
However, in this passage we are told that ALL the treasures of true wisdom and knowledge can be found in Christ. That’s why it is foolish to look for wisdom outside of Him. What the world may define as “wisdom” or “knowledge” or “enlightenment” is useless because it cannot tell us anything about God.
As we saw before, the Bible defines true wisdom and knowledge as knowing God and applying His will in our lives. Paul says that the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden. They are hidden to those who think of themselves as wise, knowledgeable, and righteous. Rather, those who see their own sinfulness and look with faith to Jesus, will find His treasures.
When we first believed the gospel, these treasures were given to us in full. Now, as we continue as Christians, we are able to know Jesus better through meditating on His words and work. We can depend on Him daily through prayer, and we get a better understanding of all the incredible treasures He wants to share with us.
