But this I call to mind; therefore I have hope: The Lᴏʀᴅ’s loyal kindness never ceases; his compassions never end. They are fresh every morning; your faithfulness is abundant! “My portion is the Lᴏʀᴅ,” I have said to myself, so I will put my hope in him.
Into the Text
In today’s reading, we find profound hope and encouragement. Lamentations 3:21–24 is a well known passage, but few people know the circumstances and context in which they appear. Let’s remember these are true accounts of what happened after Jerusalem had fallen.
Even in the midst of suffering and pain, we find incredible hope. Again, we see a biblical author describe in lament all the things happening around him and then practice the act of remembrance as he recalls what he knows to be true about the Lord. The truth is that, even in the midst of such pain the author chooses to proclaim the goodness of the Lord.
He knows the true character of God and places His trust in what he knows, not what he sees. He is confident that trusting God is the only possible hope.
It is important to know the truth about who God is. We need to seek to know God, His character, and His Word for ourselves, and not just be satisfied with being fed by others. The practice of opening God’s Word daily and learning more about Him is one of the most powerful and best decisions you can make for yourself and your loved ones.
Believing the truth about God is crucial. As we firmly hold on to our God and what we know of Him, the next wave of suffering and pain won’t drive us to utter hopelessness. Instead, we will be enabled to enter into a deeper, more intimate relationship with the One who holds everything together, including our own hearts.
Prayer
God, you are merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love. May the truth of who you are be the anchor to my soul when suffering comes my way. Amen.
