God’s Glory Fills the Tabernacle

Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud settled on it and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

Exodus 40:34–35

Into the Text

From the burning bush to deliverance from the hands of the Egyptians, miraculously feeding the people while in the desert, and calling the Israelites to a unique relationship with Him, all of these events in Exodus exhibit the glory of God at work.

But what is God’s glory? God’s glory is the totality of God’s perfection. In Hebrew, glory is derived from the root word for weight, and it is used to reference honor, respect, and dignity.

God’s glory was seen in the cloud that covered the tabernacle and in the fire that stood above it at night. This display marked God’s acceptance of the work the Israelites did in building the tabernacle. It showed that His presence would be with Israel as they continued journeying through the desert.

More than this, God’s glory was a reminder of God’s continued mercy and grace for mankind. After doubting, complaining, and building and worshiping the golden calf, one could argue the Israelites did not deserve God’s presence to dwell with them. But God is a promise keeper. His great love and forgiveness is greater than the faults and sins of fallen people.

For believers today, we see God’s glory in creation, the working of the church, and ultimately in Jesus Christ. Though we see God’s glory in part right now. We know that one day we will be able to fully behold God’s glory as we enter heaven.

We will spend eternity with our great God dwelling among us. We will look on His majesty and be given ample opportunity to thank Him for the love and grace given to us through His Son Jesus Christ.

Prayer

God, thank you for your grace and mercy that you would offer forgiveness so that we can already behold your glory in part now and then fully for all eternity. Amen.
