“Loyal love and truth preserve a king, and his throne is upheld by loyal love.“
Into the Text
In Esther 4, we find Esther in a position of great tension. Mordecai urges her to go before the king and plead for the lives of her people. But the stakes are high—approaching King Ahasuerus without being summoned could cost her life. He ruled with rigid laws and the threat of punishment for anyone who disobeyed them. He demanded respect through fear and power, yet Proverbs 20:28 offers a different perspective on leadership.
God’s Word teaches us that a king is preserved not by pride or authority but by love and faithfulness. This is a beautiful contrast to the way King Ahasuerus ruled. True leadership is upheld by steadfast love—something we see perfectly displayed in the life of Jesus, the King of kings. Jesus didn’t come to enforce His power over us; He came to be with us, to walk alongside us, and to love us unconditionally. His love was so deep that He gave His life on the cross for us, showing that the heart of true leadership is sacrificial love, not domination.
In our own lives, whether we lead in our homes, workplaces, or communities, we are called to follow Jesus’ example. We are to lead with love, gentleness, and faithfulness rather than a heavy hand and harsh rules. The world often tells us that power and control are what make someone a strong leader, but God’s Word reminds us that love is the true source of strength.
Sweet friend, as you lead the people God has entrusted to you, may your actions be a reflection of His steadfast love and faithfulness. Let your leadership mirror the same grace and compassion that uphold the throne of our Savior, pointing others to His heart.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, help me to lead with love and faithfulness in every area of my life. Teach me to model my leadership after Jesus, who gave everything in love for us. In moments when I’m tempted to control or rule with a heavy hand, remind me that true strength is found in love. Amen.
