And do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for God is pleased with such sacrifices.
Into the Text
Throughout the history of God’s people, He has asked them to make sacrifices in different ways to show their obedience to Him. While there were times God’s people made those sacrifices and followed His commands wholeheartedly, there were other times they followed these rituals without truly honoring Him in their hearts.
God does not want our sacrifices or, more specifically, our charity, if our hearts are not aligned with Him. We should not give out of obligation, but out of worship. Charity is a way to empty ourselves so we can be filled with more of Him. Giving is an act of faith and an act of worship, a way we can show God and those around us where our treasure truly lies.
While we may not see any personal advantages when we give, God has promised to see our good deeds and reward us for each one. While we shouldn’t seek our reward in this life, Jesus said, on several occasions, that those who give to His work are storing up a treasure in heaven. It is the smartest financial investment we can make.
When our hearts are aligned with God we are better able to recognize the purpose of giving. God is pleased with our sacrifices when we cheerfully give and when the purpose of our giving is to bring Him glory.
As we continue to empty ourselves in this Lenten season, let’s commit to giving as best we can and ask God to grant us generous hearts and open our eyes to the needs of others.
