God Offers a Better Way

The one who digs a pit will fall into it; the one who rolls a stone – it will come back on him.

Proverbs 26:27

Into the Text

We often see the theme of revenge playing out in movies or TV shows—one person sets a trap for another, only for it to backfire in the end. It’s easy to dismiss this as just a plot for entertainment. The truth is, we can fall into the same trap in real life. While we may not intentionally plan physical harm for others, our words can often be the sharpest weapon.

Gossip, hurtful comments, or planting seeds of doubt about someone can cause serious damage to others and ourselves. When we allow bitterness or a desire for revenge to take root in our hearts, we harm not only those we speak against but also our own souls. Over time, we may find that our words come back to haunt us, affecting our reputation and our relationships. What we thought would be a moment of satisfaction turns into a pit that we’ve dug for ourselves.

But God offers a better way—a way of love, grace, and forgiveness. Instead of seeking revenge or using our words to tear others down, we are called to trust God with our hurts and allow Him to be the just Judge. When we let go of the desire for retaliation and choose forgiveness, we free ourselves from the trap of bitterness and find peace in His love.

Sweet friend, is there someone you’ve been holding a grudge against? Are you tempted to speak poorly of someone who has hurt you? Take that burden to God. Trust Him to handle the situation and ask Him to fill your heart with His love and grace instead.

Prayer

Dear Jesus, help me to release the desire for revenge and place my hurts in your hands. Teach me to trust you with the people who have wronged me and to respond with love and forgiveness instead. Fill my heart with your grace, and help me to reflect that grace to others. Amen.
