Brothers and sisters, if a person is discovered in some sin, you who are spiritual restore such a person in a spirit of gentleness. Pay close attention to yourselves, so that you are not tempted too. Carry one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
Into the Text
I have been on both sides of restoration, and neither side is easy. I have been the one who needed restoring, the one who had made a mess and desperately needed someone to come alongside me with grace instead of judgment. And I have been the one God has called to restore, the one who had to make the hard, intentional choice to walk toward someone instead of pulling back to a safe distance.
Galatians 6 gives us one of the most practical and convicting pictures of gentleness in action. Restore gently.
Restoration is not criticism dressed up in spiritual language. It is not pointing out someone’s failure or sending a carefully worded text that lets you feel like you did the right thing without actually showing up. Restoration is drawing close. It is coming alongside someone in their mess and helping them find their way back, and it is done with so much love that they never once doubt your intentions.
So, what does gentle restoration look like in your everyday life? It looks like picking up the phone instead of sending a text. It looks like sitting across the table from someone in their hard season, rather than offering advice from a distance. It looks like saying “I am with you in this” instead of “here is what you should do.” It looks like praying for someone before you approach them and letting God’s love for them fill your heart before your words do.
Is there someone in your life right now who needs to be restored? Not corrected from a distance but loved up close with gentleness, humility, and grace? Go to them. Be the kind of friend you would want in your hardest moment. That is gentleness lived out.
