Psalm 23 is one of the psalms that I love to read over and over again. Every single time I have opened this familiar psalm, God has met me there, reminding me that He is my Shepherd.
And the final verse is always the reminder that I’m needing.
“Surely your goodness and faithfulness will pursue me all my days.” (Psalm 23:6)
David didn’t write these words from a comfortable place. He wrote them as a shepherd who had faced lions and bears, a fugitive running for his life, and a man who had walked through some of the darkest valleys a human heart can experience. Despite all of these experiences, he came out the other side still anchored in God. This final declaration is not wishful thinking. It is a settled, confident, hard-won conviction forged through a lifetime of watching God come through again and again.
I love that word, pursue. David doesn’t say that goodness and faithfulness might show up occasionally or from time to time. No, he says that they will pursue him all the days of his life. This is true for us today, too.
Goodness and faithfulness are not cold, distant concepts God sends our way from a safe distance. They are expressions of His deep, personal, and never-giving-up heart for His daughters. When God pursues you with goodness and faithfulness, He is saying, “I see you. I know what you are walking through. I know the days that have been hard and the nights that have felt too long. I am coming after you with everything you need. I am doing this not because you earned it, but because you are mine. I love you.” This is the heart of your good Shepherd.
