Then Jesus said to him, “‘If you are able?’ All things are possible for the one who believes.” Immediately the father of the boy cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!”
Into the Text
Like this father, I’ve found myself caught between taking God at His Word and struggling with the doubts that creep into my mind. But through this story, Jesus lovingly reminds us that, with God, all things are possible.
So, what exactly is faith? Faith is an action done in response to what you know is true from God’s Word. That is why truth and faith are so interconnected. If you don’t know what God’s Word says, you won’t have the faith to act on what God says is true. Faith is trusting the words of the One whom you have come to know as true and reliable, it is taking Him at His Word.
We must have the courage to believe in the impossible, just like this father. We must never forget that we only see a portion of what is happening around us. Right now, we view life with veiled eyes, but one day, we won’t. Until then, we take God at His Word, believing He has the power to heal us, guide us, and provide for us according to His will.
That’s not to say living out our faith is easy. We face many challenges and obstacles that threaten to shake our faith. But, just like the father in this verse, we, too, can cry out to our Lord and ask for His help in our unbelief.
Prayer
Dear Lord Jesus, so many times I’ve found myself just like this father, wanting to believe but struggling with unbelief. Help me to be a woman who not only knows Your Word, but obediently steps out in faith because of it. Help me to live a faith-filled life that gives You glory. Amen.
