After removing him, God raised up David their king. He testified about him: ‘I have found David the son of Jesse to be a man after my heart, who will accomplish everything I want him to do.’
Into the Text
King Saul was appointed by God to lead the Israelites. He ultimately failed because he didn’t obey God. Samuel the prophet spoke to Saul on behalf of God and told him, “You have made a foolish choice!” The key word in that reprimand is “choice.” Saul had a choice. He could obey the God of the universe, or he could disobey Him. He chose the latter.
Saul wanted to please the people more than living faithfully for God. As a result, God raised up King David in Saul’s place and established his kingdom over Israel forever. Our Savior, Jesus Christ, came through this eternal lineage of King David.
What was the difference between Saul and David? God says He found David to be a man after His own heart. David wasn’t focused on building his own kingdom. He was determined to build God’s kingdom. David wasn’t setting out to do his own will. He chose to do the will of God. David’s heart of love for God caused him to obey God and do His will.
Are you a woman after God’s heart, or are you trying to build your own little kingdom on earth? Are you fully committed to do the will of God, or are you set on doing your own will? Ask the Lord to reveal to you where you are choosing disobedience over obedience.
Prayer
Lord, reveal to me any areas in my life that I’m choosing disobedience over obedience. Help me to change. Help me to be a woman after your heart, fully committed to do your will and not my own. Amen.
