“You are to tell your son on that day, ‘It is because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ It will be a sign for you on your hand and a memorial on your forehead, so that the law of the LORD may be in your mouth, for with a mighty hand the LORD brought you out of Egypt.”
Into the Text
We all have little tricks we have adopted in order to help us remember things. As humans, we are prone to forget and need continual reminders.
God gave the Israelites two simple commands: remember and obey. God wanted the Israelites to consecrate, or give over, their firstborn males as well as celebrate the Passover.
These acts were to serve as reminders of God’s great love for His people and His continual provision and protection for them. In turn, they were to live their lives in obedience to God.
For believers today, God has also given us the command to remember and obey. We do this through the two ordinances that Jesus left for the body of Christ: baptism and the Lord’s Supper. In these acts, we remember the sacrifice Jesus made to save us from our sin.
Baptism is an outward expression of an inward reality. It demonstrates that we identify with Christ and are washed by Christ’s atoning blood, shown through the washing of water (Matthew 3:13–17).
The Lord’s Supper allows us to remember Christ’s broken body and shed blood through partaking of the bread and wine (1 Corinthians 11:23–26).
There are also things we can do individually like memorizing Scripture, keeping a prayer journal, and celebrating significant moments in our walk with Christ.
All of these keep the gospel at the forefronts of our minds. They help us to realign our hearts so that we live in gratitude and obedience to our good and loving God. Remember and obey.
Prayer
God, thank you for being our good provider. I pray that I would remember your works each day so that I can live in gratitude and obedience. Amen.
