This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” – and I am the worst of them! But here is why I was treated with mercy: so that in me as the worst, Christ Jesus could demonstrate his utmost patience, as an example for those who are going to believe in him for eternal life.
1 Timothy 1:15-16
Into the Text
Have you ever felt unworthy of God’s love? I know I have. Maybe you’ve felt like your past is too messy, your mistakes too great, or your heart too far gone for God to rescue you.
If you do, you’re not alone. The apostle Paul felt that way, too. In his letter to Timothy, he doesn’t shy away from his past. He acknowledges it. Paul had persecuted the church, rejected Jesus, and stood in opposition to the gospel.
He had been so arrogant, so proud, so self-righteous that he had not even seen the need for God’s grace! And yet, it’s this arrogant Paul that God met in the middle of his rebellion and turned his life around completely.
This radical life change wasn’t reserved just for Paul. God is still in the business of changing lives by His grace today.
If God could show such grace and patience to the worst of sinners, then nobody in the future could ever say they were too far gone. If God could save even a “Paul,” then he can surely save you, me and anyone else He chooses to. Sweet friend, no one is too far for His grace. Not Paul. Not you. Not me.
He came to save sinners—and that is exactly what He does.
Prayer
Lord, thank you for coming to save sinners like me. When I feel unworthy, remind me of the vastness of your love and patience. Help me to live each day in the freedom of your grace. Amen.
