Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
Ephesians 6:1
Into the Text
So far, Paul has taught how believers should conduct themselves within the church and within their marriages. He now extends his teaching to include the relationship between parents and their children as well as between slaves and their masters.
The Christian household is the most foundational way to share the love of Christ and to be a light to the world.
As believers are called to obey God who is our Father, children are also called to obey their fathers and mothers. This command was first given in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:12). Honoring our parents is to show them respect, obedience, and thankfulness. They are doing their best to love, lead, and train up their children to thrive.
This does not mean that every earthly parent is perfect or even kind. While all parents are sinners, we know that some do not exhibit love and care as they should. We are so sorry if this was, or still is, your experience. Know that the characteristics your earthly parents displayed are the exact opposite of your heavenly Father’s. He loves you so much and cares for you immensely. He has given you a new family in the church, and He longs for the day when He can spend eternity with you.
Moms, you have been given a very special role: to love your children and to show them what it looks like to diligently follow Christ. While being a parent is a journey, you are not alone on it. God is walking with you day by day as you love, encourage, and speak truth into the lives of your family.
Prayer
God, thank you for the relationships you have given through families. I pray that I would love and honor my parents as well as love and lead my children to know you. Amen.
