He delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Into the Text
Paul has prayed for the Colossian Christians to grow in their knowledge of God. He now goes on to show them that Jesus is supreme over all things. By knowing Him better, they can be sustained in their hardships and protected from false teachings. Paul wants the church to know the greatness of both the person and work of Jesus.
He starts off by saying that God has made it possible for us to belong to the kingdom of His beloved Son. There is deliverance from the chains of darkness. Jesus came down into this world and took on the penalty for our sin, fulfilled the requirements of God’s law for us, and satisfied the “bill of debt” we owed and couldn’t pay.
The prince of darkness has been slain, and we can be freed if we only want to. Through His death, Jesus disarmed “the rulers and authorities…triumphing over them by the cross” (Colossians 2:15). With our debts repaid and our sins forgiven, Satan has nothing on us. He can’t accuse us anymore. His power over our souls has been broken completely.
Our Savior has rescued all those who called to Him, even from the deepest of depths. We see this throughout all of Scripture. Think of Paul before his conversion. Think about the woman caught in adultery (John 8:1-11) or the thief on the cross (Luke 23:39-43) or the demon possessed man who met Jesus (Mark 5:1-20). Everything changed when they met and turned to Jesus.
Have you called out to Jesus? Has He delivered you from the power of darkness? If so, then know that you have already been transferred into the kingdom of eternal light and joy. It has already happened. Redemption and forgiveness are yours today.

Lord Jesus, thank you for your sacrifice, which erases all my sins. Thank you for delivering me from the power of darkness. Amen.
