Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters! Let every person be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger. For human anger does not accomplish God’s righteousness.

James 1:19-20

Into the Text

I think most of us would admit that there are days when our emotions run the show. Days when we react before we think. When our words come out faster than our wisdom. When anger, fear, or frustration take the wheel and drive us somewhere we never intended to go. I know I have had those days. And looking back, I can see clearly what was happening: my walls were down.

Proverbs 25:28 paints a very sobering picture. Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control. In the ancient world, a city without walls was not just vulnerable, it was defenseless. They were wide open to every enemy, raid, and destructive force that wanted access. The walls were not there to imprison the people inside. They were there to protect them.

Sweet friend, self-control is your wall.

James gives us three of the most practical building blocks for that wall: be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. These are not just good manners. They are the daily, intentional building blocks of a life that is protected and purposeful. Every time we choose to listen before we speak, pause before we react, and surrender our anger before it takes root, we are reinforcing our walls.

And every time we react instead of respond, speak before we think, or let our emotions run unchecked, we leave ourselves exposed. Not just to our own consequences but to the enemy who is always looking for an unguarded opening.

Where are your walls today? Are there areas of your life that feel exposed and unguarded? Areas where your emotions, words, or habits have been running the show? The good news is that walls can always be rebuilt. God is in the business of rescuing, redeeming, and restoring. He can do so in your life, too.
