Proverbs 20:1  Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.

Proverbs 23:19-21  19 Hear, my son, and be wise, and direct your heart in the way. 20 Be not among drunkards or among gluttonous eaters of meat, 21 for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and slumber will clothe them with rags.

SOAP – Proverbs 23:20

Believers are warned to avoid excessive alcohol intake and overeating. Alcohol and food, in and of itself, pose no harm.  However, when we indulge in anything to excess, we allow it to master us. God calls believers to control our appetites, rather than allowing our appetites to control us.

Are you struggling with drinking or overeating? God has given believers power to control our appetites. The ability to refuse anything in excess is available to us by exercising the fruit of the Spirit, specifically self-control.

Father God, I thank You for Your Holy Spirit.  Help me, Lord, to control my physical and emotional appetite for food and alcohol. Empower me to honor my body and honor You with everything that I drink and eat. Give me wisdom, self-control, and the will to avoid indulging in any behavior to excess. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
