“So now give me this hill country of which the Lord spoke on that day, for you heard on that day how the Anakim were there, with great fortified cities. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall drive them out just as the Lord said.”– Joshua 14:12

This is one of my favorite stories in the book of Joshua. Do you remember Caleb? He was one of the twelve spies Moses sent. From the twelve, only he and Joshua gave a positive report. Because of that, they were the only two men from that generation allowed to enter the promised land.

These events happened when Caleb was 40 years old. From that day, forty-five years had gone by, making Caleb 85 years old when he spoke the words in today’s verses. Not a young man anymore! When he said, “Give me this hill country” Caleb was indicating that he wasn’t going to allow his age to be an impediment in his service to the Lord.

He asked for mountains to climb and giants to conquer. He trusted the Lord and knew He was with him. What I love the most about Caleb is that he found no excuses to do his part in God´s Kingdom. He didn´t say that he was too old or too tired. He didn´t say the Anakim were wicked giants. He didn´t say the mountain was too big. He wanted to continue with the work set before him.

Do you have any excuses when it comes to serving God? Are you hiding behind family, work, a busy schedule, your age or something else? I pray Caleb´s example may encourage you today to serve God with all your heart.

Oh, Father, forgive me for my excuses. Forgive me for all the times when I wasn´t willing to serve You and strengthen my heart to claim my mountain. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
