Day 2
Reading: Mark 6:30–56
SOAP: Mark 6:49–50
When they saw him walking on the water they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them: “Have courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.”
The disciples had no excuse for their lack of faith. They witnessed Jesus heal many sick people, drive out demons, calm a storm, teach with authority, and multiply a young boy’s lunch to feed thousands of people. They even cast out demons, healed sick people, and preached Jesus’ message themselves.
Even though they had walked with Jesus, the hearts of the disciples were hardened. They did not understand who He was despite all they had witnessed. Those who had seen Him do one miracle believed He could do many more, but those who were with Him every day had hardened hearts.
Jesus continued to reveal Himself to the disciples, even in their lack of faith, misunderstanding, and hardened hearts. It can be easy to look at the disciples critically, but our lives are often more like theirs than those who believed Jesus could heal with only a touch of His cloak. As we continue to discover who Jesus is, may our eyes be opened to when we need to increase our faith.
Lord, I struggle with fear and doubt. I am afraid You won’t provide what I need or come to my rescue at the right time. Help me remember You are near me and that I have no reason to fear. Amen.
