Thursday – Happiness Can Not Be Found in Trials

Read: James 1:2-4,12; Romans 5:3-5; 1 Peter 4:12-13
SOAP: James 1:2-4

Count it all joy, my brothers,[a] when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.- James 1:2-4

When was the last time you rejoiced in your suffering?  Most of us do not sing praises when a nail punctures the tire of our car on the drive to work or when we lose a job.  Instead, we get frustrated at our situation.  Yet, we can experience joy in trials.  The New Testament teaches that challenging times allow us, as believers, to grow in our faith.

According to Scripture, challenges enable us to develop perseverance – which then allows for us to become mature in our faith.  Imagine what would happen if a soldier never trained in adverse conditions.  How might he survive in combat? In the same way, with each trial, we become stronger in our faith.

We also have hope in our trials and can be confident in our hope because God’s love is faithful.  Our Heavenly Father gives us the Holy Spirit as a gift, so we can understand and sense His unfailing love for us, even in our difficulties.

How can you have a positive outlook during a difficult circumstance?  The task is not easy, but you will not be walking alone.

Father God, thank You allowing me to know that even in my most trying times, I can have joy.  I know that staying positive is not easy.  Help me remember that You have given me Your Spirit to show Your great love for me.  Help me stay strong and grow in my faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
