Into the Text
From the very beginning, God designed us to live in community. As we read last week, God designed us to be in community with Him, but He also knew that we would need to build relationships with one another. As God brought all the animals to the man to name, none of them turned out to be a suitable partner for him. None complemented him the way God intended; none could provide community or companionship. So God created a woman, and the man immediately recognized her as his family—his “ezer,” or “indispensable companion.”
Together, they walked with God in the garden. They were united, an indispensable relationship that was exactly as God had intended for man and woman through marriage. Together, they were a family. The reference to the woman being of the man’s “bone and flesh” means there is a bonded relationship. They were a family, a sub-community God designed so that they would not be alone.
God was not only addressing the loneliness He knew Adam would experience without Eve. Without the woman, the man was unable to fulfill the purpose God had for him, to be fruitful and multiply. With a man alone, God would not have been able to complete His plan for humanity. There is a reason that God has made you, and He has a plan for you. He does not want you to be alone, but to work with others to build His kingdom. Together, we can do so much more than we could ever do on our own.
You were created for community, regardless of your marital status. It is part of God’s plan, and when we don’t have a biblical community in our lives, we might just be missing out on some special blessings. If you feel discouraged in this area of your life, know that many others have felt the same. We all long to be known and loved because God made us this way. Look to God to fill you with His love and ask Him to provide special people in your life with whom you can share this love. He loves to answer this kind of prayer.
