SOAP – Colossians 3:16-17

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and exhorting one another with all wisdom, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, all with grace in your hearts to God. And whatever you do in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

In the early church one of the predominant ways that theology was taught was through song. Israel was a traditional, agricultural society where knowing how to read was not a necessity. Culture was based on oral tradition. The way people in the early church remembered truths about God was through psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.

This is still true today. How many times has a song got stuck in your head? What if these songs were full of the ‘words of Christ’? What we think about matters; it affects the way we behave. If we are dwelling daily on deep spiritual truths our hearts will overflow in worship to Him. Take some time today to think about how you can allow the word of Christ to dwell more richly in you and your loved ones.

Lord, thank You that we have the ability to read Your Word today, and also for the gift of music. Help us to fill our minds with Your truths and let the Word of Christ dwell richly in us. As a result, may grace and thanksgiving pour forth from our hearts in worship to You. Amen.
