Read – 2 Timothy 3:16-17, 2 Peter 1:20-21

SOAP – 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Every scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the person dedicated to God may be capable and equipped for every good work.

When I think of training my mind often goes back to my days as an athlete; running sprints, lifting weights, pushing the physical limits of the body. However, the root of the word used for training in the Greek refers to the whole training and education of a child. Now, as a mother, this takes on new meaning. The goal isn’t supreme physical domination, rather it is building up the heart, mind, soul, and morals of a small human being. This happens through encouragement, reproof, and discipline.

Paul tells us that the Scriptures are inspired by God. In this letter, he also gave Timothy a list of four ways the Scriptures would be useful in his ministry: for teaching (what is right), for reproof (what is not right), for correcting (how to get right), and for training in righteousness (how to live right).

Lord, we are thankful for the usefulness of Your Word. Whether we are training physical children or spiritual children, Your Word is a lamp to our feet and a light for our path. Help us to walk in Your ways. Amen.
