God flooded the earth, washed it clean, and started over. This time, though, He started with a family and a promise.
And God said, “This is the guarantee of the covenant I am making with you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all subsequent generations” I will place my rainbow in the clouds and it will become a guarantee of the covenant between you and me and the earth.”
Three times our Lord said, “never again.” Never again would He flood the earth. Never again would rain fall from the sky with the purpose of starting over. Never again would the whole world be destroyed by a flood.
With God’s promise of never flooding the earth again, Noah, his family, and their descendants, never again had to fear a rainfall would destroy their world.
Storms would come and go but never like the one they had experienced.
With that promise God gave them a visible sign, a beautiful rainbow to remind them of His covenant with them.
God established an unconditional covenant with no strings attached. A covenant where no conditions were placed upon those receiving it. No rules they had to obey or keep, just a promise from God to those on earth that He would never again flood the whole earth and start over, again.
That unconditional covenant stands today.
What God promised Noah and his family, God promises to you, too.
The next time you are in a storm or just getting out of one, look up into the sky and look for your rainbow and remember God’s promise.
Like Noah, we might have to experience some incredible storms in our lives, but in the midst of the storms, let’s cling to Jesus and His unconditional covenant of grace and faithfulness. We might get tossed a time or two, but we won’t be destroyed.
The next time you see a rainbow, remember, you have not been forgotten or forsaken. God’s promises were true in the past and they are true today. God is faithful and He will keep His promises. He is the ultimate Promise Keeper.
Keep looking up, sweet friend. Rainbows aren’t the only signs God is giving in the skies. One day He will return! One day there will be another sign in the clouds, a returning of our Savior, (Matthew 24:30-31) and this time He won’t be coming as a baby in a manger.
This advent season, let’s celebrate the unconditional covenant we have with our Lord. Let’s rejoice in His promises each time we see His rainbow, the reminder of His covenant, and let’s keep our eyes looking heavenward as we await His return.
Love God Greatly!
