We were sitting on the couch in our pajamas reading a story and eating goldfish crackers. “Wasn’t that a great story about Jesus? We love Jesus!” I exclaimed to my grandson as I laid the children’s Bible on the coffee table.
Suddenly, the pint-sized evangelist sitting between my husband and I raised his arms, pointed to heaven, and started reciting the gospel: “Jesus is the Son of God. He came from heaven to earth. He lived a perfect life. He died on the cross to pay for our sins. He rose from the dead. He’s in heaven now preparing a place for us.”
We cheered and got a little teary-eyed after his recitation. I wish I could take credit for teaching little man to tell the world about Jesus, but all the credit goes to his daycare teacher. After we had tucked him into bed, my husband and I sat on the couch and felt a little convicted. A five-year-old had just shared the Good News more effectively than the grown-ups in charge. He hadn’t stammered for words or feared what we might think. He’d just let us know who Jesus was and what He had accomplished.
Sometimes I think I make sharing the gospel harder than it is. I have no problem picking up my phone, filming the antics of my grandson, and sharing what I love about him with anyone willing to listen. Yet, I struggle to feel the same freedom to share my faith.
I want to live beautifully surrendered to Jesus and leave a legacy of faith. I don’t want to look back with regret and wish I’d shared what is on my heart. My heart belongs to Jesus, and my Savior overcame death to save me. I want to live wholly devoted to Him and open my mouth to speak His name. I’m here to testify to those lost in darkness that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.
Yet, sometimes I feel like I am not the right person to share the gospel. I might say the wrong thing or not have all the correct answers about the Bible. I’m not a preacher or a theologian. Why would God choose me as His witness?
When I opened up my Bible this morning and read John 20, God spoke to my heart about how He uses unlikely people like me to go and tell His message. We are all called to share what we have seen and heard. The resurrected Jesus could have appeared to experts of the law in the temple, but He didn’t. God chose to reveal the greatest miracle in history to a woman whose heart was consumed by her love for Christ. Jesus had once seen her trapped in the clutches of the enemy and had rescued her from bondage (Luke 8:2). Now, even though Mary Magdalene thought her Deliverer had died on the cross, she still pursued Him. She came to the tomb with a heart prepared to serve even though everyone else around her had fled in fear. Her love for Jesus gave her the courage to do what was needed.
Why did God choose Mary as the first witness? God saw her willing heart. The same woman who stood before the empty tomb in tears would now leap for joy as she ran to tell the disciples: “I have seen the Lord!”
Friend, when you show up to serve Jesus, He will use you. Go and tell His Good News to anyone who will listen.
