Don’t you think some of the hardest commands seem to be the ones that are the most clear and straightforward, like “be joyful always,” “pray without ceasing,” and our verse for today, “give thanks in all circumstances?”
I find it hard because there are no loopholes; no room for excuses. We are told plain and simple that God wants our lives to be characterized by thankfulness, and I can’t weasel my way out of that one.
To give thanks in all circumstances does not mean that we plaster on fake smiles and throw out the phrase “praise the Lord” every five minutes. Instead, we are to have a posture of gratitude that flows out of our hearts and is seen in every area and circumstance of our lives.
All The Good Things
Have you ever thought about the fact that we would have nothing good in our lives if it were not for God placing it there? James tells us that every good gift we have comes from God (James 1:17).
Every good gift! No matter how small or how large, they are placed in your life by your good and gracious Father. Things like that beautiful sunny day, the chairs we sit on, the meals we eat, relief from pain, our salvation, our talents and our gifts, good memories, fun experiences, our growth in godliness, new shoes, sweet moments with our kids, date nights with our spouse… all of it comes from our good and gracious God. Knowing that we don’t deserve any of those things should produce in us deep thankfulness.
All The Hard Things
Don’t you think it is easier to be thankful during good times than during hard times? But we should be grateful during our dark days as well. It is important to understand the connection between trials and the life of a Christian.
The trials and sufferings in our lives are there to strengthen us. They are there to help us turn away from the world and toward Jesus. Sometimes God withholds what we desire to possibly protect us from some kind of harm, to sanctify us, grow our faith, to teach us to be more like Jesus, to refine us and grow in us the fruit of the Spirit, and to glorify God. We tend to be a bit shortsighted, only seeing the immediate, but God views not only our life now, but also our life in eternity, for which He is preparing us.
So even during hard times we can thank God, because none of our tears are wasted and not one minute of our hardships are without reason.
Remember that God’s mercies are new every morning, that His provisions flow throughout our days, and His protective eye is on us at night.
Of all people, we have the most reason to be characterized by thankfulness.
We have a Savior who took away our sins.
We have a God who fights for us.
Our life has meaning and is worth living.
Our souls are safe.
Our future is secure.
Let’s pray that God would help us be women who are characterized by deep gratitude that goes beyond the Thanksgiving season.
Looking To Jesus,

No fake smile for me! I’m thankful for many things and I will announce it to the world. Great post Jen. What a blessing to have a cuddly dog snoring next to me, what a blessing to be able to lie in bed before I start any activity and do my devotions. And what a gift God has given me in being a part of this amazing ministry of Love God Greatly. Thank you Lord.
Amen Jo-Ann!! Yes, there are so many reasons to give thanks, this ministry is definitely high on my list!! So was going to pick up our son from the airport to spend Thanksgiving with us! I thank God for my sleepless nights also, because those are nights He and I become real close and have great conversations. He is always here when I need Him!! Thank You Lord!!
Thank you for this. Sometimes I feel guilty about the good that I have in my life, especially when I think of different people and different countries that might not have same materials or experiences. I still consider myself a new Christian because although I have been saved for years, I did not study the Word as much as I wanted and was not obedient to God the way that he wanted. My faith heavily relied on my circumstances more than I thought. This blog, and this site, is helping me in my walk of obedience to God and opened my eyes to why I should give thanks in all circumstances. Thank you
Jen you were reading my thoughts this morning!! There is no way to weasel out of this!! Yes, this is pretty straight forward!! But the way you summed it up at the end of this simply incredible post was awesome and placed my eyes back where they need to be…looking up, not looking at the world!! What a beautiful way to end this study and get our hearts prepared for the next!! Blessings abound!! Thank you!!
Thanks Jen, so much for your post, it was a fantastic way to end a really powerful 2 weeks studying thanksgiving. So thankful for your insight and putting into perspective those hard things in life!! Bless you!
Amen to this!

As I enter my time with the LORD in the morning , I approach the LORD telling Him I’m ready to feast at His banqueting table. I come expecting a fabulous spread . God out did Himself this morning . He talked to me about His sacrificial love . He reminded me once again about light. We have teens and young adults who are afraid –they are trapped in the dark. They need to be directed to the light. Then I read from the Beatitudes about how blessed those are who hunger and thirst for righteousness. Dessert was finally served reminding me to give thanks in all circumstances. I’m now really full like after that Thanksgiving feast , I need to digest , but soon will come running back for more of this good stuff. My heart is so heavy and burdened for these lost teens and young adults. May someone please turn on a flash light that will direct them to Jesus ! He is what they are looking for —its not Hillary or Bernie ! –Its Jesus who loves them unconditionally !
I lost my daughter last Christmas to an argument. I pray she will talk to me again. I love her app much.
“In” everything, not necessarily “for” everything. I notice this tiny two letter word “in” and it changes everything. In this. In that. Offer thankful praise to God “for” His love and I know I am “in” His will. When I wonder at my purpose I can offer thanksgiving and I know God is pleased. The creator of our world and all the wonders within has loved me and loves you, and “in” this love I am grateful. The flame that flickers in my soul is fueled by the Spirit of God and it burns hotter when I practice thanksgiving and prayer. Crazy talk to someone who doesn’t know Jesus. Love talk to the one who does. “In” my toughest trials I have fallen at His feet and found greater comfort than any food or drink, movie, book, or shopping trip I could find. Nothing satisfies my soul thirst like Jesus. So when the days are hard and the world feels cold, draw near to the living God and let His Spirit warm and comfort your heart. Because He will. And I am grateful. Thank you Lord for this study. Thank you for the hearts of those here reading. Thank you for the blessings You are giving to each beautiful woman in this study group. Thank you for the blessings to come. And thank you for Your sacrifice and affliction for our souls and hearts. May Your Spirit come to each of us today and in this Thanksgiving week as we celebrate. In Jesus’ name amen.
