“Now it was during this time that Jesus went out to the mountain to pray, and he spent all night in prayer to God.” – Luke 6:12

I love Jesus, and His humanity while on earth makes me love Him all the more. He was fully God and fully human. And these facts give my heart so much joy and make my Christian walk easier. Jesus could have chosen any other life to live. But His life shows me how I can Iive in deep communion with God and how I can be like Jesus; a true follower of God. Nothing else gives me so much joy.

Jesus was confronted with sin and He didn’t fall, so I can be confronted with sin and not fall. He had people misunderstand Him, including His family, and He didn’t cut them off. Instead, He loved and did what He could for them. When I model my life after Jesus, I can also live with difficult people, loving them and pointing them toward salvation. Jesus had a thief and betrayer as a disciple. He knew Judas would betray him. But He still lived and walked with Him. He didn’t use His divinity to kill Judas, He loved all those who came around Him. Those deserving and those not deserving. In fact, sinners were Jesus’ friends.

Jesus showed us that it is possible to be human, confronted with the worst, and still choose to live our lives in such a way that it brings glory to God.

In our reading today, Jesus takes time out to pray. He went up the mountain and spent all night talking to His father. I wonder what He was telling His Father. What was their conversation like? Jesus is God, yet He still prayed. After Jesus was done praying, He chose His disciples and delivered one of the most tangible sermons on how to live for God.

Jesus survived here on earth by being in close communion with the Father. Through His example we learn that, if we want to survive in this world, we also need to pray and be in close communion with the Father. Jesus wasn’t above prayer, and neither are we. Jesus spoke with the Father before choosing His disciples, showing us that we need to talk to God before we make decisions. He didn’t just move on and do as He liked. He acknowledged the sovereignty of the Father over Him.

I wish I could be like this every day of my life, not venturing out on my own but asking the Father for direction. Jesus did it and I should, too. Jesus’ humility in dealing with the Father is to be copied by all of us who say we are followers of God.

As you read the verses for today, plead with God to birth in your heart a desire to be like Jesus. He was humble enough to know He needed the Father and took great lengths to spend time in prayer, acknowledging His need for the Father.

May we always be found at God’s feet, no matter how long we have been believers. May we never “grow up” so much so that we venture into life’s issues without consulting Him.
