Receiving the Love of God

Love is easy to talk about but much harder to grasp. We know in our minds that God loves us. In the quiet moments of our day, do we actually believe it?

“In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.” (1 John 4:10)

God’s love is unlike any other love we have known. It is not something we earn by being good enough or doing the right things. It is something He freely gives. Yet, if we’re honest, many of us wrestle with feeling unworthy of that love. I know, I do!

A young mom, exhausted from sleepless nights and toddler tantrums, might wonder, “How can God love me when I lose my patience every day?” A single woman watching friends get married might believe, “Maybe I’m not lovable enough.” A mother whose children have grown and left home may struggle with regret, thinking, “Did I do enough? Did I fail them?”

How easily we convince ourselves that we are not enough. We carry guilt, compare ourselves to others, and listen to the lies that say we must prove our worth. But 1 John 4:10 tells us something radically different: God loved us first. Before we could ever love Him in return. Before we could clean ourselves up or present ourselves as worthy.

His love is not based on our performance, parenting, past, or perfection—it is rooted in who He is.

So, when we feel unworthy, may we return to this truth: God’s love is already ours. It is not ours to earn, only to receive.
