Introduction to Abiding in Jesus

Abiding in Jesus sounds like it should be so simple, right? Just stay connected to Jesus. Draw strength from Him, and live in His love. But in practice, abiding can feel elusive, especially in a world that pulls us in so many directions. So why does it seem so hard to stay rooted, to let His love, peace, and purpose shape every part of who we are? Perhaps part of the answer lies in understanding the setting of Jesus’ words in John 15.

On the night before He was betrayed, Jesus gathered His disciples for one final meal together called the Last Supper. With only hours before His arrest, knowing the suffering that awaited Him—not only His own crucifixion but the trials, fears, and challenges His disciples would soon face—Jesus chose His last words carefully. And in that moment, His message to them was clear: “Abide in Me.”

Jesus’ words in John 15 are the heart of His final teaching. He knew His disciples would soon be scattered, afraid, and facing a world that would feel dark and confusing without His physical presence. He knew they would need something that could sustain them and carry them through the hardest days. And so He urged them to stay connected to Him, like branches connected to the vine. Abiding in Him would become their lifeline. It would be their source of strength, hope, and resilience in the coming days.

Just as His disciples needed to abide in Him to navigate the unknown, we, too, need to stay connected to Jesus to face the struggles, uncertainties, and distractions of our own lives. The secret to living abundantly, Jesus teaches us, is bearing fruit. And the more closely we abide in Him, the more our lives will bear lasting fruit—fruit that will bless others, strengthen us, and ultimately glorify God.

In this study, we will unpack what it means to abide in Christ, to draw close to Him daily, and to let His life flow through us. As we read His final words to His disciples, we’ll learn what it looks like to stay rooted in Him, not just in the easy times but in the trials, challenges, and unexpected moments. Together, we’ll journey into the heart of abiding, discovering the peace, strength, and abundant life that comes from staying close to the true Vine. Jesus invites us to abide in Him. In doing so, we find the joy and purpose of a life fully lived for His glory.
