Blandina was an enslaved girl in the Roman Empire who lived in Lyons, a city in the region of modern-day France. Blandina had come to know Christ and was part of the church in Lyons. In A.D. 177, Blandina, along with other Christians, was arrested and subjected to horrific torture at the hands of the Romans. Many Christians were persecuted by the Romans because they refused to worship the Roman emperor or Roman gods.

Forced to endure days of inhumane punishments, Blandina and the other Christians became spectacles for the Roman officials and crowds. Blandina was forced to watch her fellow Christians suffer physical torment. She was told she would be spared if she denounced her faith. She refused.

Instead of denying Christ, Blandina faced death. Instead of worshiping idols, Blandina accepted torture. She was convinced meeting Jesus after her death would be far better than anything she endured on earth. She persevered through torture that killed many others, all the while praying and praising God.

Blandina’s faith and prayer in the final moments of her life inspired other Christians who were enduring and witnessing torture. Many were strengthened in their faith as they watched Bladina remain steadfast and focused on Christ as she faced certain death.

We may not face physical persecution or life-threatening situations for our faith, but we can stand firm in our belief in Jesus no matter what. Bladina’s faith shows us that nothing, not even life itself, is more precious than Jesus Christ.
