Brought up in the faith by her maidservant, Monica of Hippo knew the power of Jesus. Though she was given in marriage to an unbeliever, Monica’s faith in Christ did not waiver. Living in North Africa in the fourth century A.D., Monica was influential in the lives of many, sharing Christ’s love and the hope of the gospel.

Monica was the mother of Augustine, who became one of the most influential Christians of all time. As a child, however, Augustine, like his father, did not embrace the Christian faith. Monica, though deeply saddened and distressed over the unbelief of her husband and children, was enormously faithful in prayer.

Monica did not stop praying for young Augustine. She brought him up in the faith and continued to pray for his salvation as he entered adulthood. Toward the end of her life, Augustine, as well as Monica’s husband, finally came to faith in Christ. Monica displayed great faith in Christ as she persevered through prayer and persistently brought her requests before the Lord. Augustine later admitted Monica’s faithfulness in prayer for him was one of the driving forces behind his conversion.

Monica’s faithfulness in prayer affected not only her family but the global church for centuries, a legacy that continues today. Augustine served as bishop in Hippo and wrote some of the most influential books in history, shaping the theology of many other church leaders. May we have faith like Monica, faithfully bringing our requests to the Lord, day after day, continually trusting Him with the outcome.
